Ammo and Sister Agencies Kick Off Volunteer Challenge in SF Office

Volunteering_slt_il_258 Looking for a way to inspire and motivate employees to give back to the surrounding community, the 475 Brannan Street office raised the bar by asking all employees to take a "Volunteer Challenge."

Each employee has been asked to commit to at least 5 hours of volunteer time with the collective goal being 500 hours by the end of 2009. The Green Bean team will help identify diverse volunteer opportunities such as beach clean-ups, after school tutoring and visits to the elderly. Each month, a survey will be sent out to employees for measuring volunteer donated time and to announce "scores" for each business unit.

Keeping it competitive, "thermometers" are hung in the office areas of the respective business groups so that staff can see how their group is progressing. We are at Ammo are excited to be encouraging our employees to give back to the community in a meaningful way, while celebrating their individual passions and philanthropic work.

Measuring Twitter: Good idea! Now...how exactly do you do it?

2945559128_53078d246b Twitter put out a new guide today for businesses looking to use the microblogging service. The advice is really simple and straightforward. But, considering that the vast majority of the population has heard of Twitter but never actually used it, this could be massively useful.

But, for anyone who has been using Twitter, there are some clear places where their advice falls way short. In particular, their advice on measuring the value generated by the service, which is found in the best practices section.

The advice they give on measuring the value generated from the service is essentially that you should use a tool to track clicks from Twitter and use coupon codes and such. This is certainly a best practice, but that's a best practice for anything you do on the Internet. Their advice is exactly the same you might give (and I have given) to email marketers.

With Twitter and with social media, though, you need to go deeper. Yes, you can use social media in the same way that you use your other direct marketing channels, but that wholly ignores the interconnected, social graph nature of the medium. You absolutely need to measure value from social media. But don't just stop at the surface. You need to also measure the degree to which you are engaging into the community as well as the velocity and distances that messages that you originate spread.

Naturally, this is more difficult. But if you want to get a sense of the true value you're creating with a social media campaign, just getting measuring the easily-measurable stuff won't get you too far.
